TEARSHEET

Chalet Stool

The Chalet draws from archetypal forms of the Swiss stabelle, a seat held together by turned legs and precise joinery. Weight applied gains stability through splayed legs, establishing structural integrity. A central slit reveals dovetail joinery below.

Slideshow

Stabelle seating has been at the center of homes, chalets, and taverns throughout the Alpine region for centuries. By the 1500s, the stabelle became the everyday chair. Its form belongs to no single maker, only generations that carried it forward.

Origin

The stabelle was shaped by necessity as much as craftsmanship. Every refinement answered a practical need, leaving little to add and even less to take away. Over time, its simplicity became its defining strength.

Evolution

Chalet begins with that same clarity of purpose. Every proportion, joint, and transition serves the whole, allowing the archetype to remain unmistakable while continuing to find its place today.
